(background/history)
Once upon a time, there was a family who lived on a farm in Queensdale. The family had four children: Three girls, and one boy. Tyra was the second born of the children born to this family, her older sister being born five years before her and her younger siblings being born three and five years after her. Tyra, along with her siblings, was raised on the farm. She learned how to take care of the crops, how to feed and clean up after the animals, and she wished her father and occasionally her older sister a safe trip whenever they went to deliver crops to sell in the large Krytan city of Queensdale. All in all, Tyra was pretty happy with her life. She was a fairly normal girl. She bickered with her siblings, she did chores, she loved her Mom and Dad. Yeah, life was great.
But then, when she as ten years old, she visited the big city with her father on one of his crop deliveries. As they moved into their stall and set up their goods for sale, Tyra looked around curiously. There were things being sold in a stall that she could barely see that she was very curious about. While her father was busy with setting up the stall, Tyra sneaked away and went to see what it was about.
With Queensdale being a human city, only humans were permitted to sell their wares on the streets of the city. So, it was a human selling his wares. They were unlike anything she had ever seen, though. There was an assortment of machines, technology made of shiny metals and operating seemingly on their own. Tyra was completely transfixed, and she had to know all she could about them. She started bombarding the poor salesman with questions about his items: What is it? How does it work? What is it made from?
Her father eventually realized his daughter was missing and found Tyra hassling the poor man with questions. He scolded her and apologized to the man, explaining to him that this was her first time in the city. The salesman didn't seem to mind too much, and stated that a child's curiosity was a treasure that should be nurtured. Tyra's father brought her back to their stall, and they sold crops until it was time to go back to the farm.
Tyra's life changed that day, though. She knew then that she didn't belong on the farm. She needed to do more with these machines. So, between doing all of her chores and helping out with the family farm, she would go looking for things she could build possible machines out of. Supplies for that purpose were rather limited, but she was obsessed and determined to build something that worked. Her desperation for this took her to asking their neighbors if they had anything she could use, which rose some eyebrows. Her parents and siblings all started to worry about her. Her hobby was strange. It was a hobby none of the other children shared or had a passion for. Farming was all they knew. But, Tyra wasn't hurting anyone, so they allowed her to have her fun as long as she did her chores and contributed to the work.
Tyra created her first successful invention two years later, at age 12. Since chores were hard work, her first creations focused on making them easier. Thus, her first invention was a watering can that had a wheel inside of it full of water sacs, and all of them dispensed a certain amount of water per plant. Unfortunately, her first invention was full of flaws. She had to continue to refill the water more often than she would have with a standard watering can, as there were certain small amounts held within it, plus it was really very shoddily made, being made by a twelve year old girl who had no training and no idea what she was doing. Not only did it make work more difficult, it didn't last for very long. Stubborn Tyra insisted on using it out of pride, until it eventually broke. Her parents, frustrated that it had been taking her so long to do her work compared to her siblings, continued to chide her, telling her that the traditional methods of farmwork were the way to stay with, and that her inventions were not going to help anything.
Tyra was determined to prove them wrong.
Unfortunately, all of her inventions after that were eventual failures, too. It left Tyra frustrated, but she was determined not to give up on this. She enjoyed tinkering with machines, constantly looking for that one that would make life easier for someone, somewhere. For the next three years, she continued to try and fail, but she learned a little more each time she failed.
When Tyra was fifteen, she decided she needed to seek out a teacher if she was going to continue on with her inventing. Not just any teacher, though; Tyra was determined to find an Asura who would take her on as an apprentice. Winning over the Asura wouldn't be easy, though. She had never personally met one before, but she'd heard stories of their intellect and genius. They thought Humans were "bookahs," or "simple-minded creatures." They were clearly above the intellect of humans, and they wanted everyone to know that. Convincing one who thought of humans as lowly that she would make a good apprentice would be nothing short of a miracle.
Still, Tyra was stubborn and determined. So, she said her goodbyes to her parents and siblings (and her older sister's husband, too, as her older sister had gotten married a couple years prior), and left on her way to Lion's Arch.
And then, once she was in Lion's Arch, she made her way to the asura gate that would lead to Rata Sum, the Asura City.
She stepped in front of the asura gate to Rata Sum.
She stared at it for a long time.
She took a deep breath.
She could do this! It was her future! She could do it!
She lifted her foot to step through that gate ....
...
... And then put it down where it was. No, she was too nervous. She couldn't do it.
Tyra turned around and headed out to wander around Lion's Arch. If she was too nervous to go after her dream, what else could she do? She didn't want to return to her parents empty-handed.
Fortunately, she didn't have to be alone in Lion's Arch. During her wandering, she met someone who would ultimately become her soulmate of the non-romantic variety: a thief by profession, named Dayren. The two met and hit it off immediately. Tyra then spent more time in Lion's Arch, hanging around with Dayren and getting to know him a little better. Eventually, she tried to cross the Asura gate once again.
... And again, she got cold feet right as she was about to enter. She returned to Dayren, grumbling about how she failed to step through that damn gate. Dayren, ever the amazing friend, took her by the arm and led her out for a walk in the Gendarran Fields, north of Lion's Arch.
The two talked about the situation, and Dayren encouraged her to keep trying, that she had the bravery to go through the gate and chase her dream. Unfortunately, their sweet moment was cut short when they were attacked by some Pirates. Dayren protected Tyra, who just cowered in fear the entire time, because, lo and behold, the girl didn't know how to fight more then "whack it with a wacky stick."
Dayren did manage to successfully fend those pirates off, though, and the two of them went back to the safety of Lion's Arch. This was where Tyra realized that if she was going to be in this big wide world, she was going to have to learn how to fight ... so she asked Dayren to teach her how to dual wield pistols. Dayren agreed, and Tyra spent a little more time learning how to fight from her best friend.
Tyra was a rather quick learner, and within a month of training, she was already doing pretty well. After Dayren thought she was good enough to fight on her own, he then told her he had somewhere to take her. She followed, of course, and soon enough she and Dayren found themselves in front of the Asura gate to Rata Sum again.
Dayren urged her gently to go, and even told her he would go with her for moral support. Tyra took a deep breath, and the two of them finally went through the gate together.
Day couldn't stay with her, but getting her through the gate was enough of a success that she was feeling a little more confident in what she had set out to do to begin with. With that confidence, Tyra went about trying to find an Asura that would give her the time of day.
... Which proved to be even harder than she originally thought. Not that she expected it to be easy anyway.
Tyra got rejected and ignored by the Asura she spoke to so many times that she became frustrated, and started to lose hope that maybe she would find an Asura mentor. Tyra wandered out into Metrica Province, the city outside of Rata Sum, and found some broken golems. She decided to pass the time while thinking of how else to approach the Asura by trying to figure out how to fix the golems.
She failed a lot, of course. Asuran technology was far beyond anything she had ever tinkered with herself. Her determination to continue trying to figure things out did catch the attention of one Asura, however: An Asura named Vinnetria. (Don't call her by her full name, though. She'll throw fireballs at you if you do.)
Vinn noticed how hard Tyra was working to try and understand the technology behind the broken Golems and was amused (and a little impressed) by her. She talked with Tyra, and offered to mentor her, stating that she already had another human "pet," and would be glad to take on another one. Being called a pet aside, Tyra was ecstatic about the opportunity, and immediately jumped at the chance to be mentored by Vinn. And so it happened! From then on, Tyra was an apprentice under Vinn.
Tyra then went to live with Vinn while she was apprenticing. She met Vinn's family, her niece, Andestras (Ande), and her twin brother, Ozwell (Ande's father). She also met her fellow apprentice, Jasper.
The two didn't quite get along. He frustrated the hell out of her, just by being so good at what he was doing already. She irritated him by being such a bundle of energy all the time. The two regularly got into "arguments," by which I mean she yelled at him over stupid things and he calmly spoke back like the jerk he was until he decided it was useless to respond and just ignored her.
